Protected Since 1964
The Mount Zirkel Wilderness Area encompasses over 160,000 acres and is one of the original areas protected under the 1964 Wilderness Act, although at that time, it was only about half as many acres were protected. Offering more than 70 lakes and 15 mountain peaks that are over 12,000 feet, it also covers a vast expanse of ecosystems, so many that it would probably take years to explore them all. Still recovering from the Routt Divide Blowdown in 1997, a devastating windstorm that was responsible for millions of trees being toppled, it still offers a secluded wilderness experience that will change the way you look at suburban life forevermore.
Wilderness Area Adventures
